About Me
I am an associate professor of French literature and culture at the University of Kansas, where I have taught since 2001. I specialize in Renaissance literature and culture, with a particular focus on popular culture and humor. My current book, Hostile Humor in Renaissance France (forthcoming from University of Delaware Press), explores the ideological and polemical uses (and abuses) of humor and satire during this turbulent time in France’s history. I have published in journals such as French Studies, The French Review, French Forum, and Renaissance and Reformation/Renaissance et Réforme. In 2010, I published a monograph, Rabelais's Radical Farce: Late Medieval Comic Theater and Its Function in Rabelais (Ashgate).
In recent years, I have become involved with issues related to graduate student training, mentoring, and job placement. Probably the best part of my job is teaching. I teach classes on Renaissance literature, contemporary French culture, gender in the Renaissance, obscenity in French literature, the French Wars of Religion, and other topics.
When I have the chance, I love cycling, playing racquetball, skiing, hiking, and reading. There is not a happier place for me than on a sandy beach somewhere tropical with a drink in one hand and a good book in the other. In the absence of a tropical locale (did I mention that I live in Kansas?) a lake or even my backyard will suffice.
